The DP is a pre-university course of studies leading to examinations; it is designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfil the requirements of various national education systems. While providing students with the necessary skills and qualifications to enter a range of higher education institutions around the world, the DP also makes provision for students to increase their awareness and understanding of the connections between the academic disciplines they are engaged in every day and the real world. Students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences as learners in everyday life and to make connections between academic disciplines and between thoughts, feelings and actions.

It emphasizes breadth and depth of knowledge, intellectual inquiry, and character development through the core requirements (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and CAS)
